This guidebook describes routes up to Difficile grade on all the 4,000m peaks and mountains in the Alps, which are spread over 6 regions in France, Switzerland and Italy. The routes described are concentrated on all of the great ridges and mixed climbs established on the 4,000m peaks during the Golden Age of alpine pioneering of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In total there are 50 major mountains over 4,000m which are covered by over 230 different routes, including every significant top. The routes range from beginner’s climbs on the Breithorn and Allalinhorn to the Peuterey Ridge on Mont Blanc. All the routes are shown on colour photo topos with detailed descriptions and descent information. The guidebook is aimed at the summer mountaineering season from end of May through to mid-September.

The 4,000m mountains are grouped by region from the Bernina Alps in eastern Switzerland, covering the Valais Alps, Mont Blanc Massif through to the Ecrins massif in France. A general overview of each area is described including a summary of the valley bases, details of all the huts and hut approaches. For the huts contact information is provided including websites and email addresses.
