This Azores guidebook describes 86 of the finest walks along the coast and in the mountains on the nine islands of the Azores. The nine islands are Santa Maria, Sao Miguel, Pico, Faial, Sao Jorge, Terceira, Graciosa, Flores and Corvo that are situated in the middle of the Atlantic but belong to Portugal. These islands are still free from mass tourism and are a great attraction for nature-lovers and walkers. In fact Portugal’s highest mountain is located here, which is Mount Pico (2,351m) on Pico Island.

The geography of the islands is very varied that is reflected by the variety of the walks ranging from pleasant strolls through meadows and forests or along the coast, to challenging mountain hikes – all of which are detailed in this guidebook.

For each walking route there is a detailed description, along with a map at a scale of 1:50,000 showing the route, comprehensive GPS data, and height profiles.

The landscape of the Azores can certainly be described as extremely varied. These range from forests, rolling hills, and deep blue volcanic craters lakes, to towering extinct volcano peaks, along with many valleys and gorges. This guidebook provides all of the information necessary for a successful walking holiday on the Azores.

Published in June 2020 (revised 4th edition) by Rother, most of the walks in this guidebook are shown on the Azores Tour and Trail map.
