Rock
Climbing Around Madrid
Within 50 miles to the north and east
of Madrid are several rock climbing areas. The type
of rock is generally granite and the majority of the
routes are bolted. Madrid is quite high at 581m above
sea level, and these crags are in the mountains above
the city.
The area offers good multi-pitch (up to
200m long) rock climbing, in the easy to mid grade range
(French 5 to 6b). The walk-ins to the routes is anything
from 30 minutes to several hours and often the climbing
will be at an altitude of well over 1000m. Hence the
rock climbing around Madrid definitely has a great air
of adventure about it.
The best time of the year to go rock climbing
in Madrid is the spring and autumn. Though most of the
routes are bolted it is advisable to take traditional
gear such as nuts and friends, and a pair of 50m ropes
due to the route lengths and mountainous environment.
The rock climbing areas shown below have
been extracted from "Escaladas En La Comunidad
De Madrid" by Tino Nunez, which details selected
rock climbs of the Madrid region. There are many more
route than shown below, for example at La Pedriza there
are over 1,800 routes and at La Cabrera there are 370
routes. |
