Climbing at El Chorro - Logistics
A 60m rope is essential for climbing
here. As the routes are generally fully bolted it is possible
to travel light and take only quickdraws (12-16), an abseil
device, and a few long slings. However a few routes are only
partially bolted and some trad gear is required. This information
is detailed in a new guidebook for the area called Andalucia
by David Munilla and covers all the sports climbing
in the El Chorro valley. This guidebook also covers the surrounding
crags close to Malaga, such as Desplomilandia,
Turon, and the pinnacles and spires of Torcal de Antequera.
Further to the east is the excellent crag of Loja
near Granada, which again is covered by the guidebook.
This guidebook is available to buy from
shop.
From Europe there are many
cheap flights to Malaga, with El Chorro being only 50Km away
either via train or car. The train is fine if you are only
interested in climbing in the gorge, as all the climbing is
accessible on foot. However to visit the other outlining crags
it is essential to hire a car.
Accommodation is not a problem
at El Chorro and climbers can choose from a couple of refuges
or a campsite or Finca's, such as
Finca La Campana. Climb Europe also has apartments
to rent, click
here for further information.
20 minutes drive away is the village
of Alora, which is much larger than El Chorro. Therefore it
offers much more choice in accommodation and night life in
terms of restaurants and bars.
The ideal time to visit El Chorro
is in the spring and autumn, with the winter being slightly
cold, especially in the gorge where you get very little sun
and sometimes a cold wind. The summer is just too hot!
