Albarracin and Surrounding Area

Bouldering in Albarracin

Albarracin has the reputation as the best bouldering area in Spain and is often described as the next best in Europe behind Fontainebleau, and is very popular with Spanish climbers. Like Fontainebleau, Albarracin has many huge ancient sandstone blocks that are solid, well-weathered and situated in a forest. There are a variety of problems to climb from quality slabs, amazing arêtes, overhanging walls on crimps and cracks, to huge roofs.

One of the main advantages of bouldering at Albarracin as opposed to other bouldering areas within Spain is the temperature. Albarracin is over 900m above sea level making the air cool enough to climb throughout most of the year except high summer and is generally very dry.

This bouldering area at Albarracin is still being developed and hence there is no guidebook available to buy. A local topo is available from the campsite or the bar on the main road to the boulders. However this topo is limited to the 3 main areas near the road. An online topo is available from http://comandonerp.iespana.es, which again shows detailed boulder plans of 3 sectors near the road and shows the position of 6 more. Unfortunately it is only available in Spanish. Ask at the bar for more information, talk to local climbers or just go and explore.

Bouldering in Albarracin - Logistics

Cheap flights are available to Valencia or Zaragoza, where a car is hired and Albarracin is reached within 2 to 3 hours of driving. Within Albarracin there are numerous places to stay with the main campsite offering a number of bungalows to rent, see www.campingalbarracin.com.

Finally some of the boulders have ancient paintings on them, and there have been some access issues though these have generally been resolved by the local climbers. Generally don't climb on boulders with paintings on and respect the area by not wire brushing and leaving litter.
