Rock
Climbing Areas of Sardinia.
The island is a little over 250Km long by 135Km
wide, and car travel can be quick as long as you follow the main
roads, such as the highway that runs from Cagliari to Porto Torres.
Therefore by avoiding the slow mountain and coastal roads, it is
possible to visit several areas in a single visit to the island.
The information detailed below concentrates on the various sports
climbing and bouldering available on Sardinia.
(1) - Nuoro and
Cala Gonone Area
The traditional area to go rock climbing in Sardinia is Cala Gonone
within the Province of Nuoro. The mountains around Cala Gonone,
as well as sea cliff climbing stretching down to Arbatax, offer
superb climbing in dramatic situations. For more information about
rock climbing around Nuoro, such as the excellent locations at Isili
and Jerzu, please click here. For specific
information about Cala Gonone, then
please click here.
(2) - Cagliari Area
The majority of the climbing is based around Iglesias. The most
impressive crags are at Domusnovas, where there it is possible to
climb on gentle slabs or fierce overhangs. To the west of Cagliari
there are several bouldering areas on granite rock. For more detailed
information, click here.
(3) - Oristano Area
This area has only recently been developed and hence there are limited
climbing opportunities. To the north west of Oristano there is a
large granite Bouldering area, with other crags offering sports
climbing on mainly dark basalt rock. For more detailed information,

(4) - Sassari Area
The main climbing is around Osilo, just to the east of Sassari,
where there are several limestone crags, which offer good single
pitch sports routes. To the west of Alghero, at Capo Caccia, there
is some impressive sea cliff climbing on bolted limestone. For more
detailed information, click here.
