Getting
to Sardinia
The majority of climbers will arrive in Sardinia via one of the
3 airports on the island, which are Alghero
(Fertilia), Olbia
(Costa Smeralda) and Cagliari-Elmas
international airports. Many major carriers and budget airlines
fly into these airports.
Getting around Sardinia
The public transport system on the island is limited and difficult
to use, and therefore it is advisable to hire a car. The island
is a little over 250Km long by 135Km wide, and car travel is quick
if you follow the main roads, such as the highway that runs from
Cagliari to Porto Torres. Other good roads and highways run from
Macomer to Olbia, from Nuoro to Tortoli in Ogliastra and from Cagliari
to Tortoli in Ogliastra. The other mountain and coastal roads are
often windy and slow. Sardinia is much bigger than the other classic
destinations for a climbing holiday. So it is important to allow
enough time to visit each area - at least a week per area.
Accommodation for Rock Climbers in Sardinia
Currently Climb Europe has information on various villas/apartments
for rock climbers to rent in Cala
Gonone, and near Iglesias,
which is ideal for the rock climbing at Domusnovas. Click
here for more information. It is also possible to rent
apartments within the other major climbing areas such as Isili and
Jerzu.
When to go
The best time to climb is in the spring and autumn, though it is
possible to climb at many crags during the winter as well. Unfortunately
during the winter many facilities can be closed. The only time of
the year to avoid is the summer, especially August, when it gets
extremely hot and very expensive.
