The
immediate area of Cala Gonone there are 13 major crags with
over 400 routes. There is everything a rock climber could
wish for from short single pitch routes to 200m+ classics
on slabs, steep walls or fierce overhangs. The 13 major crags
can effectively be broken up into 3 major rock climbing areas
within Cala Gonone, which are as follows:
- Fuili - One of the original
rock climbing areas of Cala Gonone that has seen some
great development in the past few years.
- Poltrona/Tornanti - Poltrona
is one of the classic crags of Cala Gonone with multi-pitch
routes up to 150m long, within a superb natural bowl.
Climb Europe has apartments to rent within walking distance
of Poltrona crag.

- Monte Irveri - to the
north of Cala Gonone, this is a relatively new rock climbing
area, particularly around Alveare, Arcadio and Biddiriscottai.
The town of Dorgali is only 7Km
from Cala Gonone and to the west of this town is another major
climbing area called Supramonte. This area has many bolted
multi-pitch routes up to 400m long, offering fantastic big
wall rock climbing. To find out more about this area and others
within the Province of Nuoro,

Logistics
For the majority of the routes
a single 60m rope and up to 12 quickdraws will be sufficient.
For those looking to climb the long multi-pitch routes at
Supramonte, then duel ropes and a full lead rock with nuts
and friends is advisable.
The best time to go rock climbing
is from the autumn through to the spring as it is just too
hot in the summer months. |
