Rock climbing areas around Cagliari and Domusnovas

The rock climbing to the east of Cagliari (known as Sarrabus), has become more popular due to the discovery of new and interesting bouldering sites on beautiful granite rock. There are many good bouldering areas such as Geremeas and Rio Pilocca, where their are marvelous boulders of smooth granite waiting for thousands of problems to be invented!

Concentrated around the town of Iglesias is Sardinia's largest rock climbing area, with over 600 routes. This area is dominated by the rock climbing at Domusnovas, where there are 440 routes alone! The rock climbing at Domusnovas is very varied with numerous slabs, walls and overhangs to choose from across all levels of difficulty. The rock climbing here is generally on excellent bolted limestone.

The climate here makes it an excellent place to visit to go rock climbing from early autumn right through to late spring, and hence is a popular "winter sun" rock climbing holiday venue.

The French grading system is used to grade all the rock climbing routes in Sardinia, except for the bouldering areas where the Fontainebleau grading system is used.

For the majority of the routes a single 60m rope and up to 12 quickdraws will be sufficient. For those looking to climb the long multi-pitch routes, then dual ropes and full lead rack are advisable. Trad/Sport means the bolts on the routes are either very well spaced or nonexistent! It is advisable to bring friends and/or nuts for these routes.
