Denali (Mt McKinley) is the highest mountain in North America. Its arctic latitude makes for extreme weather conditions and the remote location in the Alaskan wilderness means that climbing teams must be self-reliant and experienced. Harry focuses mainly on the West Buttress. The guidebook includes advice about preparation and planning trips, also there is some medical advice on how to prevent and manage altitude sickness. There are also practical tips on load-carrying, glacier travel and camping. Included is a 3-panel fold out and 3-panel map showing the West Buttress route. The book is in full colour, with over 60 photographs, and the format is waterproof.
Denali’s location near the Arctic Circle and the Pacific Ocean (Gulf of Alaska) gives it some of the most ferocious weather in the world. The park covers more than six million acres which includes a complete sub-arctic ecosystem home to large mammals such as grizzly bears, wolves, Dall sheep, and moose. Additionally, almost the entire original two million acres are designated a wilderness area. The Park and Preserve is located in the heart of the Alaska Range and is home to countless glaciated mountains and granite peaks accompanied by some of the world’s largest, longest, and deepest glaciers. Over 425,000 people visit this world-class national park every year.
