75-June-Zillertal-Climbing-Guidebooks-BlogZillertal, located near Innsbruck in Austria, is a beautiful green and narrow alpine valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks.  Dotted throughout this valley are numerous granite blocks of all shapes and sizes, providing a paradise for sport climbing and bouldering.  The climbing is varied from delicate quartz slabs, to deep granite cracks, and steep crimpy overhangs.  Zillertal is the place to climb sport routes and boulder in a scenic alpine setting that is off the beaten track.  There are routes and problems across a wide range of grades, particularly in the mid-grades.

Ewige Jagdgründe is the stand out classic crag with 7 massive boulders up to 50m high, providing some of the best and most varied sport climbing within the valley.  The majority of the routes are single pitch, though there are some bolted multi-pitch routes as well.

With regards to bouldering then the classic areas are Zillergrund Wald, Sundergrund and Ginzling. Zillergrund Wald is the largest of these areas, which is covered with an alpine coniferous forest, providing shade on hot summer days.  Sundergrund is surrounded by steep mountains with great boulders located in a flat alpine meadow, making this a very family friendly location.

The Zillertal rock climbing guidebook has just been reprinted detailing 33 sport climbing areas and 17 bouldering areas.  It is a thoroughly modern guidebook with all routes shown on colour photo topos.  It is written in German though all the approach information for each crag is also in English text.  Each guidebook has unique code to download an App to the full guidebook that is free of charge.
