70-February-Margalef-Sport-Climbing-GuidebookMargalef is the second largest climbing area in the Sierra de Prades Mountains (also known as the Costa Daurada climbing area) that are close to the towns of Reus and Tarragona in southern Catalunya.

The type of rock found at Margalef is conglomerate, and the style of climbing is all about pockets, with an abundance of mono, two finger and three finger pockets.  The majority of the routes are vertical or slightly overhanging, but there are also slabs, impressive bulges, and incredible roofs.  There are over 1,400 sport routes at Margalef spread evenly across the grades, ranging from F4 to F9b+.

The Montsant River runs through the middle of a valley forming a narrow steep gorge, where the village of Margalef is located.  With crags on both sides of the river it is possible to climb throughout the year in either in the sun or shade.  About 80% of the routes are 20m long, that means you can get away with a shorter rope and less quickdraws than most other European destinations – less weight for the plane!  However these routes can still pack a punch as they are often athletic and the conglomerate rock requires good footwork.

The sport climbing in Margalef guidebook is very comprehensive and the most up to date guidebook for the area.  All the routes are shown on colour photo topos, along with the route length and the number of bolts.  This guidebook is in Catalan, Spanish and English text throughout, and is packed with loads of useful information for the visiting climber.
