Plaisir West Rock Climbing Guidebooks

The western Swiss Alps (sometimes known as the Bernese Oberland region) is a mecca for technical and adventurous rock routes in an alpine setting.  The area is home to many different types of rock from limestone faces and ridges to gneiss, quartz and granite spires, and is a perfect playground for the mid-range rock climber.  There is the choice of long multi-pitch routes at either low altitudes or more serious alpine summits in wild and rocky alpine settings, as well as an abundance of single pitch sport routes.

Two new guidebooks have just been published for the Western Swiss Alps, called Plaisir West Volume 1 and Plaisir West Volume 2.  Plaisir is French for pleasure and both of these guidebooks only describe rock routes up to F6c. They include both single pitch and multi pitch routes of which the majority are fully bolted.

Plaisir West Volume 1 describes the area between Fribourg and Goschenen and is split into 3 areas:

1) Fribourg to Frutigland – An expansive area to the south of Bern including the impessive walls at Gastlosen and the alpine routes on the Bire near Kanderstag.

2) Interlaken to Meiringen – Interlaken is widely considered as having some of the best sport climbing area in Switzerland, including Hintisberg and the fantastic multi-pitch routes near Engelhorner.

3) Susten, Grimsel and Furka – These 3 Swiss alpine passes in the heart of the Alps provide a wide range of single and multi-pitch routes on gneiss, quartz and granite rock.

Plaisir West Volume 2 describes the area between Annecy in the French Alps to Big in the Swiss Alps and is split into 3 areas:

1) Haute-Savoie Region in France – This region includes the mild climate around Lake Annecy to high alpine mountains near Chamonix. It includes the Grandes Suites, Col de la Colombiere, and Cluses near Annecy, plus the Aiguilles Rouges near Chamonix.

2) Bas Valais to Vaud Regions in Switzerland – This region covers the climbing around Montreux, Martigny and Sion. It covers both single pitch sport climbing in valleys to adventure alpine climbing in the mountains.

3) Oberwallis Region in Switzerland – It covers the climbing around Brig, including Wiwanni, the Fiescher Valley, and the Turtmann Valley.
