The definitive Kalymnos rock climbing guidebookKalymnos is one of the best sport climbing destinations in the World, and the new definitive Kalymnos Rock Climbing Guidebook has just been published.

The best thing about climbing on Kalymnos is the sheer volume of high quality routes at every grade.  The new guidebook lists 3,400 routes with; 739 routes up to F5c+; 1,181 routes between F6a and F6b+; 754 routes between F6c and F7a+; and 728 routes F7b and above.

The style of climbing found on Kalymnos is very varied from slabs and delicate walls to steep overhanging walls, with features such as pockets, stalactites and tufas.  The climbing styles can be broken into 3 main types:

  1. Extremely overhanging with blobs, tufas, and stalactites, which can be “just” F7a even at a 20 degree angle.
  2. Slightly overhanging or vertically smooth white and orange walls with pockets and smaller tufa features.
  3. Sharp grey slabs full of water pockets with little iron knobs cemented into the wall.

The best of the routes on Kalymnos can combine all three types of styles in one route.  The rock on Kalymnos is limestone of the very best quality – a little sharp in places and hardly any polish due to rough surface of the rock at Kalymnos.

Autumn is the ideal climbing period for Kalymnos, closely followed by the spring and winter.  With Kalymnos now having direct flights to Athens it is easy to get to Kalymnos at any time throughout the year
